5 Fun Writing Tips for Young Authors (By RJ!)

Hi Creative Explorers!
Have you ever wanted to write your own story but didn’t know how to start? Don’t worry! I’m going to share 5 fun writing tips that help me create my stories. You can try these at home too!

1. Start with a “What If” Question
This is my secret weapon! All my stories begin with a silly or interesting “what if” question.
Example:

What if a teddy bear became a superhero?

What if a spaceship landed in my backyard?

Your Turn:
Think of a “what if” question and write it at the top of your page. That’s the start of your adventure!

2. Draw Your Characters First
Before I start writing, I love to draw my main character. Is it a talking dinosaur? A brave little girl? A robot with a funny hat? Drawing helps me imagine their world better.

Challenge:
Draw your character and write 3 things they love to do.

3. Mistakes Are Part of the Fun
Sometimes when I write, my sentences sound weird or I spell words wrong. That’s okay! Writing is messy at first. I always read my story out loud to my parents, and we fix it together. Authors call this “editing.”

4. Pretend You’re Telling Your Best Friend
When I get stuck, I pretend I’m telling my story to my best friend. It helps me keep my writing fun and simple. Just imagine you’re chatting while telling the adventure.

5. Make Up Funny Words
One of the best parts about writing your OWN stories is that you can invent your own words!
Example:

“Fluffaroo” (a soft animal)

“Ziggle-zap” (a silly dance move)
